The first chapter of the Bedford Book of Genres, “Understanding Genres”, gave me a better understanding of all of the possibilities for the third project of ENC 2135. When Mr. Wenzel first said that we could use any type of genres for the project, I was somewhat confused. Throughout my academic career, I have always been asked to write, write, write. 95% of the time the writing consisted of short paragraphs or a type of essays. For the first time, I am being asked to create something out of the ordinary for a school course and given the liberty to choose what it is I want to create. I had some ideas when it was first mentioned in class, and the inquiry has lingered in my mind ever since. Nonetheless, nothing even close to Kristen LaCroix’s 3D pill capsule collage or a stranger’s obituary had crossed my mind. I now truly understand the huge variety of options for genres that exist, many of which would have never occurred to me without reading this chapter, since they are not regularly associated with academic life. I am excited to explore some of these genres and see what my classmates come up with as well.
