“Who the fuck is Reggie?” Bad Boys 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMnP_zQmMLw

  • The text (and a brief personal narrative on the student's encounters with the text).

  • Background: I chose this non-traditional text to present because once in high school my brother sort of recreated this scene of Bad Boys 2. My parents were on vacation and a friend was giving me a ride to a party. My parents told my brother, who was also going out, to not leave until I was picked up. My brother was pre-gaming at my house with a friend, and were watching funny clips, this one among them. They start to get mad because they want to leave but my friend was running late. He eventually showed up about an hour and a half late and my friend and my brother decided to recreate this film to annoy me and to “scare” and mock my friend.

  • How the text is typical and atypical conventions of the genre

  • The text is typical of the comedy genre because

  • They use vulgar language and props.

  • They are also very loud, exaggerated and dramatic.

  • It catches the expressions of all characters to make people laugh.

  • The characters are idiots.

  • They use violence.

  • It is fast paced

  • Deals with day-to-day situations, anyone can relate.

  • The text is atypical because:

  • It does not use natural light

  • The emotional setting at the beggining

  • Rhetorical situation the text/genre arose from/addresses

  • Taking out a girl on a date from the viewpoint of the parents, which we do not usually see.

  • The tone or style and the purpose(s) of the text/genre

  • Mocking, silly

  • The intended or consequential audience of the text/genre

  • The intended audience is teens and young adults, who are the most that can relate to this situation.

  • The unintended audience is anyone else that decides to watches the film, most probably adults since the movie is rated R.

  • A brief description of the evolution of the genre

  • The genre began mainly with silent films and what is called slapstick comedy, which consisted of known actions like the pie in the face, loss of trousers, people chases, etc.

  • However, nowadays comedy is generally a lot less innocent.

  • P

otential complication, implications, problems, and pitfalls of the text/genre

  • Potential complications might be that the characters are black and it presenting the common negative stereotype of them, such as:

  • The guns, the aggressive behavior, the fact that one of them just got out of jail and so on.

  • Received bad reviews because of its excessive ad graphic violence and misogynistic depiction of women, among other things.
